Surge Protection

A power surge can happen at any time. They arise from several causes such as faulty gear, storms, extreme fluctuations in voltage to a circuit or supply deficiencies from your power company. Due to greater sophistication in electronic pipes, the smallest burst in electricity can result in substantial ruin to electric components causing irreversible harm.

One of the most common causes of electricity surges there are: repeated interruptions of the electricity flow, and lightning strikes and other related events that send an electric impulse back into the circuit. Although most men and women have a tendency to blame power strikes on lightning, thunderstorms are only responsible for a measly 2% of all surges. Apparently, over 50 percent of these surges are triggered by large voltage equipment and compressors. These spikes happen many times every day, whenever appliances or devices powered by engines start up or shut down, diverting energy from and into the system. Such appliances include but aren’t limited to fridges, kettles and ac units.

How a surge protector works

The live cable or primary power line at a surge protector contains an extra linked connection that feeds to an earth wire. A ground cable’s purpose is to direct any additional current safely into the ground. The surge link from the protector remains inactive until a larger than normal voltage appears. This extra current is then safely diverted through the extra earth wire, directly into the ground. This averts more current than normal from flowing to your appliances efficiently making sure that they are protected from any harm which can be caused by power surges.
